mythos

This series of Giclee prints reference real locations and mythological phenomena set on the Greek island of Ithaca and the surrounding Ionian Sea.

The visual language of the original works was inspired by themes in Margaret Atwood’s novella The Penelopiad such as symbolic land and sea locations, flora and sprits of the underworld and water which have ambiguous significance.

Each work was developed via a series of traditional fine art processes, either beginning life as an original mixed media, watercolour collage, acrylic on canvas or monotype work, built up though mark making and colour washes designed to connote associations with water, it’s movement or passage, nature or the supernatural.

The process then moves from the traditional to the digital realm, with colour, transparent or opaque digital overlays and glazing developing spatiality and recalling silk screen and other traditional fine art printmaking techniques.

The final Giclee limited edition images are printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper tailored for Fine Art printing which preserves and enhances depth and textural qualities.

Work in progress: The Forest of Perachori

The Forest of Perachori (a real, dense forest location on Ithaki, the Greek island backdrop where Margaret Atwood’s novella is set) from the Mythos series is shown here as a final image with deep emerald and other green glazing for spatial density and depth. Other images document the process of making this work from the starting point with the development of hand coloured watercolour combined in the studio with photocopied and collaged elements to onward progress where a prototype final work enters the hybrid realm, showing here with test digital glazing in black.
